British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a joint strike on an underground arms cache in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, pinpointed through surveillance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was located in mountainous terrain just above the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets employed Paveway IV guided bombs to target a several access tunnels down to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the attack on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - referred to as Daesh - enforced extremist governance over large swathes of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This strike demonstrates British leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to stamp out any resurgence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

UK warplanes have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of the group subsequent to its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of our armed forces who took part in this strike for their professionalism and their bravery," the Defence Secretary said. "Including them were numerous British personnel on duty over the festive period. This operation, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who threaten our safety, shows how our armed forces are ready to step up, all year round, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and influential overseas."

Last December, the United States armed forces conducted what it termed a "large-scale strike" against Daesh sites in Syria, following an assault killed two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations says IS still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in both countries.
